Almost every landscaping estimate reduces to the same conversion: an area in square feet, a depth in inches, and a material sold by the cubic yard, the bag, the roll or the pallet. The magic number is 324 — square feet times inches of depth, divided by 324, equals cubic yards. (It works because a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and an inch is 1/12 of a foot: 27 × 12 = 324.) The calculators in this section all build on that conversion, then translate the volume into whatever unit your supplier sells.

The paver tool works in the other direction — from area down to individual units, with a cutting-waste allowance for edges and curves. The sod tool adds up rectangles and circles and converts to rolls and pallets. The topsoil tool turns yards into bag counts and an approximate weight, because bulk delivery is priced by the yard but your truck’s suspension cares about the tons.

Two honest caveats apply across all of them: pallet and bag coverage varies by region and supplier, and soil weight swings with moisture. Where a number is a rule of thumb rather than arithmetic, the page says so — check the final quantity with your supplier before ordering a full truck.
